Casa Awänímä is a property designed for tranquility, rejuvenation, and connection to nature. This private suite has been thoughtfully created to be both beautiful and comfortable, offering a luxury experience for you to rest and recharge. Our permaculture gardens are bursting with life and available for you to harvest. This space is ideal for solo travelers or couples looking for a peaceful place to land and soak in Guatemala's natural beauty. Your mind, body, and spirit will thank you.
The space
The Agua room is located at Casa Awänímä, a communal living property and eco-lodge designed to inspire peace and a deeper connection to nature. This room is a beautiful space in a brand-new building, created with natural materials like light-clay-straw walls and Guatemalan-harvested teak floors. The earthen walls maintain the perfect indoor temperature, and the natural plaster gives it a cozy, earthy feel.
This room has a queen-size bed, daybed for lounging or sleeping an extra guest, a large closet and big drawers to store your things, and a private bathroom with a toilet and sink. The best part is the spacious outdoor deck where you can relax in a hammock, work at the desk, and enjoy the clean air and fresh lake breeze. From the deck you have a breathtaking view of the valley, lake, and volcanoes, and the big open sky that's always a wonder to watch.
The building has been thoughtfully designed and lovingly decorated with handmade textiles and artisan goods, creating the perfect balance between a natural feel and comfortable luxury. This is the most well-crafted building in Tzununa -- it is not rustic like many other accommodations you will see.
Just steps outside your door is a fully-equipped communal kitchen (always stocked with fresh eggs from our chickens), and 2 open-air showers with hot water and great pressure, shared with the 2 other rooms in the building.
When you book with us, you'll have access to the outdoor yoga deck (covered in passion fruit!), earthen temezcal and river-fed cold plunge, and lounge areas around the property to read a book or drink your coffee. We can also help you to arrange a massage on the property for extra relaxation!
THE LAND
If you dream of having a homestead or permaculture farm someday, this place will give you a lot of inspiration!
The gardens were all designed according to permaculture principles, built “on-contour” meaning they follow the curves of the mountain to maximize water distribution and penetration into the soil. We used rocks from the land to build the terraces. Everything has been made by hand.
Our gardens are fully organic, meaning they have never seen a chemical fertilizer or pesticide. We make our own compost here with the help of chickens and food scraps, which then goes into the garden bed to add nutrition.
In the gardens you’ll find many perennial foods, like gandul (pigeon pea), malanga (taro root), maracuya (passion fruit), citrus, mora (mulberry), avocado, and fig.
Guests love harvesting fresh herbs for teas and cooking. Our many herbs to choose from include lemongrass, tarragon, rosemary, thyme, oregano, basil, sage, chamomile, wormwood, comfrey, geranium, yarrow, horsetail, rue, lemon verbena, mint, lavender, plantain, epazote, and more.
You’ll also find many flowers which we love to plant for beauty and also to attract pollinators like hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies.
As land stewards, it is important to us to create as much biodiversity as possible, grow medicine in the form of herbs and fresh, healthy food that will nourish our bodies, and create habitats for insects and birds. We are blessed to have a lot of water in Tzununa, and it’s our responsibility and honor to maximize the water to create abundance and fertility on the land.
ABOUT TZUNUNA
Tzununa is a quiet town with not that much to do, and we like it that way. It creates an atmosphere of tranquility and small-town vibes.
The property is a 5-minute walk from Love Probiotics (Friday night pizza!), Gaia Dance Temple (Sunday ecstatic dance), and Karuna, which offers kirtan on Sundays. Another 5 minute walk uphill, you'll find many trails in the mountain to enjoy the trees, rivers, and waterfalls. The lake is a 15 minute walk downhill or a 5-minute Tuk Tuk ride, and you can access all the other villages via walking, tuk tuk or boat.
San Marcos is a popular town for travelers, and it's a close tuk-tuk ride away, where you'll find tons of restaurants, shops, and activities. Close enough if you want it, and far enough away for you to escape the buzz of a busy town.
If you'd like to come with a large group of friends or family, check out our other listings, and book together!
